There was an interesting advertisement on Page 14 of The Borneo Post today.
At first glance, the black and yellow colour scheme may have fooled most people into thinking it was a Maybank ad. Upon closer inspection though, it definitely had nothing to do with the financial institution’s loan promotions or credit card applications.
Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) appears to have adopted techniques more popular in advanced democracies (or rimauataskerusis); the use of negative ads in mainstream newspapers.
However, they may have lost the plot a bit, because after even closer inspection, the ad actually had a positive spin…for the intended target! In this case, it was the Honourable Member for Pelagus.
If such practice continues in Sarawak, the biggest winners will inevitably be the local newspapers. Advertising money is money after all.
After this, who knows…maybe we’ll see more local political consultants coming up and in a few years (or months) Sarawak will have its own versions of Karl Rove and Alastair Campbell.
