democracy and rimau-atas-kerusi.

I was listening to a rather spirited speech by Sarawak Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud this evening and was quite surprised to hear him use the expression “rimau atas kerusi”.

He explained that he could not take credit for the phrase as it was coined by one of Sarawak’s greatest Iban Paramount Chiefs, the late Tun Jugah Anak Barieng.

Apparently, Tun Jugah was referring to a form of democracy.

Our Chief Minister said somehow when there’s rimau-atas-kerusi (as opposed to the democracy that brings  peace and prosperity to the nation) the people who do the real work would get bitten by the tiger, while those who shout loudest would get their way, at any cost.

In any case, this rimau-atas-kerusi thing needs more contemplation….

“rimau atas kerusi = tiger on a chair”
